Texas electricity providers and utilities

Texas is a deregulated energy market, so you can pick your electricity provider and plan. Deregulation means that several energy providers are competing for business, and you have the power to choose among them. Selecting the best provider for your needs involves comparing different plans and rates. Some of the Texas electricity providers that you can choose from are 4Change Energy, Constellation Energy, Direct Energy, Gexa Energy, and TXU Energy.

Oncor Electric plays a different role from an energy provider. A provider buys energy from the companies that generate electricity, sells it to the consumer, and manages your account. On the other hand, the utility takes energy from the provider and distributes it to homes and businesses through the power lines it maintains. In essence, you will buy power from a retail electric provider in Texas.

Your utility company is responsible for restoring service during a power outage, not your electricity provider. If you are an Oncor customer, you can report a power outage using the online portal.

In a deregulated energy market, consumers can choose a retail electric provider but cannot choose their utility company. Oncor rates must be approved by the Public Utilities Commission of Texas, so there is government oversight of Oncor electric rates.

Choose Texas Power allows you to compare plans and rates from the different electricity providers in Texas for free. You can then filter your results by provider, plan features, customer ratings, term length, and more. Once you have selected a retail electric provider, you can sign up for a plan through our website or by phone.
